Five years after the foundation of Bartestree FC as a junior football club, some of the original juniors were looking for senior football, and some of the Dads fancied a game too. The new village hall had a brand new full size pitch beside it, and so Chairman Keith Locke took the decision to enter a senior team into the fourth division of the Herefordshire Football League. Keith managed the team for the first year.
That first season (97/98) the boys took some hammerings, including a club-record 13-0 defeat at Burghill. 118 goals were conceded in just 20 league games, but despite this the top three in the Player of the Season (1 Nick Freeman, 2 Dave Price and 3 Dave Blankley) were all defenders. Club legend Dave Price had started the season playing for Bulmers, but had switched to Bartestree upon moving into the village, next door but one to a certain Alan Moore.
Paul Harriman played for Holme Lacy, but made the move to Bartestree to be joint Player-Manager (with Dave Price) from the start of 98/99. He oversaw promotion to Division 3, and in his third and final season (00/01) ‘Harry’ raised the HFL Peterson Cup with a 2-1 victory over Skenfrith at Bulmer’s Sports Ground.
Phil Andrews came from Sutton to play for Bartestree at the start of the 00/01 season. In his second season (01/02) he took over from Harry and Dave as Player-Manager, drawing players to the club from Sutton, with Harry dropping down to run the Reserves. Phil managed the club for ten successful seasons, taking the club from Division 2 up to the Herefordshire Prem.
At the end of season 10/11, Phil invited Dave Cadwallader (who was at Lads Club) to get involved. Cad wanted to be First Team Manager, so Phil dropped down to manage the Reserves, with Harry running the Colts. The Caddy Era had begun.
